President & CEO, Project Patient Care

Martin Hatlie, JD, is President & CEO for Project Patient Care, the Chicago land safety and quality improvement coalition, which is dedicated to using the voice of the patient to improve care. He also serves as co-director of the MedStar Institute for Quality & Safety, which integrates open and honest communication strategies, person and family engagement, and high reliability organization principles into safety and quality improvement. Mr. Hatlie is active in US federal health system transformation work as a consultant on several projects funded by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute.

Mr. Hatlie is a former lobbyist for the American Medical Association (AMA) and lead strategist for its nationwide tort reform campaigns. He coordinated the AMA’s launch of the National Patient Safety Foundation in 1997 and served as its founding Executive Director from 1997 to 1999. He currently serves on the Boards of Directors of the Leapfrog Group, the Alliance for Integrated Medication Management, and Loyola MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn IL, as well as Consumers Advancing Patient Safety. Mr. Hatlie also serves on advisory boards for the Agency for Healthcare Quality and Research, the Joint Commission, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, the National Quality Forum, the Patient Safety Movement Foundation, and the World Health Organization Patients for Patient Safety Programme.
