Susan Freeman (Temple University Health System) Susan Freeman, M.D., is president and CEO of the Temple Center for Population Health, LLC, vice dean of health care systems and professor of clinical medicine at Temple University’s Lewis Katz School of Medicine, and chief medical officer of the Temple University Health System. As the founding CEO of the Temple Center for Population Health, Freeman has implemented value-based health care and payment models to achieve sustainable, high value outcomes for at-risk patient populations. Aligning clinical and business elements, data analytics, quality incentives, and community engagement, she established the Temple Care Integrated Network to improve healthcare performance and reduce health disparities in North Philadelphia. Freeman chairs the Temple Health Substance Abuse Task Force, dedicated to clinical, educational, and research solutions for the opioid epidemic, including management of a Pennsylvania Coordinated Medication Assisted Treatment (PacMAT) grant.
A graduate of Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine, Freeman completed both her internal medicine residency and endocrinology and metabolism fellowship at the Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Medicine, Rochester in Minnesota. She holds two Master of Science degrees, in preventive and administration medicine from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and in biochemistry from Wayne State University, Detroit.
Freeman teaches population health, health systems science and health policy at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University and a reviewer for the Journal of HealthCare Quality. Her recent regional and national presentations include: population health as a clinical and business imperative; the implications of healthcare reform on safety net hospitals; transforming ambulatory care to meet the value equation; addressing the opioid epidemic; and linking health policy to graduate medical education. She has authored papers on thyroid disease, diabetes, consumer driven health plans, patient value and healthcare system transformation.
Freeman is a fellow of the American Association of Physician Leadership and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists. She serves on the board of the Regional Health Share Exchange, the Healthy Kids Subcommittee of the Philadelphia Task Force on Sports-Based Youth Development, and the Settlement Music School Germantown Branch board.
